Runes are alphabetic writing systems used by Germanic-speaking peoples from roughly the 2nd century CE. The oldest, the Elder Futhark, had 24 letters, each representing a sound. Later systems include the Younger Futhark (16 letters, Viking Age Scandinavia) and Anglo-Saxon Futhorc.
Letter names are known from later medieval rune poems and scholarly reconstruction (marked * below). Inscriptions are mostly names, memorials, ownership marks and short formulas.
“Futhark” takes its name from the first six letters of the alphabet: f, u, þ, a, r and k. Different runic alphabets belong to different periods and languages; they are not interchangeable sets of symbols.
Runes were cut into materials such as stone, wood, bone and metal. Their straight strokes lend themselves to carving, but surviving inscriptions also show considerable variation in letter shapes and spelling.
What is modern
Our authentic, present, enough, strong, independent, free, grounded, resilient and aware marks carry modern brand meanings. They are contemporary artistic interpretations, not attested ancient translations.
A bindrune joins two or more runic letters into a single form, often by sharing a vertical stroke, or stave. Think of it as a ligature: separate letters brought together in one connected mark.
Historical examples occur in runic inscriptions. Their reading depends on the inscription, its language and its context—not simply on the outline of an isolated symbol.
Today, artists also make bindrune-inspired designs to express personal ideas or intentions. These contemporary meanings should be distinguished from historically documented letter combinations.
A modern mark for an idea such as “enough” is not automatically an ancient word, a Viking emblem or a historically attested protective symbol. We make that distinction explicit in our collection.

The ASH & RAVEN Bindrunes — Design and Symbolism
The three ASH & RAVEN bindrunes were conceived as contemporary symbols inspired by Norse runic forms, each expressing one of the ideas at the heart of the brand: authentic. · present. · enough.
The intention was to create three individual marks that felt ancient in their visual language but modern in their meaning. Each uses intersecting straight lines, a central structure, and restrained geometry.
These are original artistic compositions, not documented Viking Age or medieval Icelandic bindrunes with established meanings. Their interpretations belong to ASH & RAVEN.
Three new draft designs extend that visual family: strong. · independent. · free.

authentic.
The central staff, the branching paths, the individual.
The design is built around a strong vertical line intersected by angular branches. The central staff represents a stable sense of self. The branches suggest different experiences, choices, and directions in life. Their intersection represents the idea that these experiences belong to one individual.
Intended meaning
“Your experiences may shape you, but they do not have to define you.”

present.
The intersection, the balance, the moment.
This symbol uses crossing diagonals and a central axis to create a balanced, interwoven shape. The crossing lines suggest the meeting of different directions at a single point. The symmetrical geometry represents balance, while the central axis symbolizes remaining grounded in the present.
Intended meaning
“Wherever you are, you are here.”

enough.
The enclosed form, the foundation, the completeness.
The upper diamond-like form suggests wholeness and self-containment. The central staff provides a stable foundation. The descending angular lines create a sense of grounding.
Intended meaning
“Nothing needs to be added to make you complete.”

strong.
A steady center. The resolve to continue.
The central staff
The uninterrupted vertical line represents an inner foundation: the values and sense of self you can return to when circumstances change. Its continuity gives the design a feeling of endurance.
The central diamond
The enclosed form suggests a protected core. It represents personal integrity and the boundaries that help you hold your shape under pressure.
The crossing branches
The balanced diagonals meet at the diamond’s upper and lower points. They bring different directions into one structure, representing the ability to meet tension, adapt and remain whole.
The pointed ends
The points at the top and bottom give the staff a deliberate finish. Together, they suggest grounded resolve and the will to keep reaching forward.
Intended meaning
Strength is the quiet ability to stay connected to yourself, hold your boundaries and continue.

independent.
Your own center. Your own direction.
The central staff
The longest line establishes an individual axis. It represents self-trust: the ability to make choices from your own values and accept responsibility for them.
The upper crossing
The diagonals open toward different directions while meeting at a shared center. They represent the possibilities and influences you encounter, and the freedom to decide which to follow.
The two side stems
The shorter upright lines give the form balance and support. They suggest the relationships, knowledge and experiences you choose to draw on while keeping your own center.
The inner chevron
The inward-rising diagonals gather at the central staff. They represent discernment: bringing what you learn back to yourself and deciding what belongs in your life.
Intended meaning
Independence is trusting your judgment, choosing your connections and taking ownership of your direction.

A sense of self. Room to move.
The central staff
The upright line represents the self that remains present through movement and change. It gives the design a point of continuity without fixing every branch to the same direction.
The upper-right triangle
Its outward-facing point suggests intention and a chosen horizon. The enclosed space holds that direction briefly, giving freedom a sense of purpose.
The two left branches
These parallel diagonals reach outward from different points on the staff. They represent multiple paths and the permission to explore, reconsider or change course.
The lower-right branch
The separate diagonal carries the eye onward and leaves the lower form open. It represents movement beyond what is familiar and the space to become something new.
Intended meaning
Freedom is having room to choose, explore and change while remaining connected to yourself.

grounded.
A long central staff with paired short down-sloping upper branches and a wide triangular lower enclosure bisected by the staff; the staff continues below its base.
Intended meaning
“Rooted in yourself.”
resilient.
A long central staff with an upward arrow at its top, a widened crossing lower motif and paired angular open returns at the lower left and right.
Intended meaning
“Rise and begin again.”
aware.
A central staff through a wide diamond, paired upper branches and, below the diamond, one long downward-left branch and two long parallel downward-right branches.
The three symbols share a consistent design language: straight strokes, intersecting forms, vertical alignment, and compact geometry. That makes them recognizable as a collection while allowing each to have its own character.
The construction draws on the visual tradition of bindrunes, in which runic characters can be combined or share strokes. A documented list of specific historical runes used to construct each original design has not been recovered.
The explanations above describe the visible geometry and its proposed artistic symbolism; they are not verified ancient rune meanings or a documented stroke-by-stroke account of the original construction.
Historical rune letters and their phonetic values, historical combinations of runes, and the modern symbolism of the ASH & RAVEN designs are distinct.
The three newer drafts follow the owner-approved source artwork supplied November 3, 2026: a pointed staff and central diamond for strong., symmetric crossing diagonals and shorter side stems for independent., and a right triangular loop with descending branches for free. The clean traces remove the carved texture, not the geometry. Their meanings are modern brand interpretations, not ancient translations.
The philosophy behind the collection
The symbols are deliberately small and understated. There is no English translation on the shirt, no explanatory slogan, and no requirement for anyone else to understand them. Their meaning is personal to the wearer.
authentic. present. enough. You are.
